Church-trained, Southern bred, reborn urban dread, Nadir (meaning RARE and UNIQUE) is a clear and resonant new voice of cultural change. Producer, singer-songwriter and activist Jonah Nadir Omowale brings us an undeniable musical message, steeped in both tradition and innovation. His music is called Distorted Soul. It is soul music that incorporates elements of jazz, rock, funk, hip-hop, folk and gospel to create a revolutionary hybrid that honors the past as it moves your body and spirit toward the groove of the future.

And that music is winning over critics and audiences alike... Nadir has received several recent awards for his work including two 2005 Detroit Music Awards (Outstanding Urban/Funk Songwriter and Outstanding Urban/Funk/Hip-Hop Recording), a finalist berth in the John Lennon International Songwriting Contest, a Grammy Demo Review Panel grand prize, and he was selected by the editors of Billboard Magazine as a finalist in the 2004 Independent Music World Series. Listeners at GarageBand.com are raving over his song "Slave" giving the tune a 5-star rating.

Nadir grew up performing with school bands and church choirs in the small town of Elizabethton, Tennessee, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Recording Industry Management from Middle Tennessee State University. He launched his professional career in nearby Music City, USA - Nashville, Tennessee, and the city’s world-class artistic environment allowed Nadir to cultivate his vocal, instrumental and songwriting talents in a diverse array of pop, rock and R&B projects, as well as a variety of folk, jazz, and gospel ensembles. The versatile artist honed his lead vocal chops as front man for Dancing With Ellie - a progressive rock band that attracted modest major label interest. Strong musicianship and high-energy stage presence earned Nadir a stint as bassist for RCA’s alternative hip-hop artist Me Phi Me. This was a tremendous experience as the band shared the stage with a host of now legendary acts such as Public Enemy, Arrested Development, Dionne Farris, Rage Against the Machine and Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy (featuring Spearhead’s Michael Franti and jazz guitarist Charlie Hunter). Nadir enjoyed tours of the U.S. and Europe and appeared with the group on MTV, The Tonight Show, the BBC, at the Apollo Theatre and on Soul Train.

It was Jack Johnson - an intense, groundbreaking band co-founded by Nadir and guitarist, Paul Cochrane - that marked the next phase in a rapidly evolving career. Named after the first black heavyweight boxing champion, the group released Round One on the independent PC! Music Company label and garnered a loyal following in Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky, along with radio play in several markets across the country. The critically acclaimed album included songs that were later featured in the feature films Barb Wire, starring Pamela Anderson, and 1999, which starred Amanda Peet.
Ever in pursuit of his own unique musical vision, Nadir embarked on a process of self-examination and soul searching that ultimately led him to Detroit and to his solo career. The result is a strikingly honest, sonic self-portrait, Distorted Soul 2.0, which was released to the public in the summer of 2004.
