Freddie Jackson
Freddie Jackson ranks right behind Luther
Vandross as the premier male vocalist of the
'80s and early '90s in Urban Contemporary circles. He may in fact be a better
pure soul
singer, having had a solid gospel background. Jackson hasn't been able to
duplicate
Vandross' crossover appeal, however, although he's had a large number of R&B
smashes.
Since 1985, when his debut LP, Rock Me Tonight, was released on Capitol, Jackson
has
had many Top Ten R&B singles, and from 1985 until 1987, he had six number
ones,
another number two, and two others at number eight and number nine respectively.
He
finally departed Capitol in 1994 for RCA, looking for a fresh start with Here It
Is. After a
long hiatus, Jackson resurfaced in early 2000 with Life After 30.
